{"id":2466,"date":"2026-09-09T07:31:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T14:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phcventures.ca\/?p=2466"},"modified":"2026-09-09T10:01:02","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T17:01:02","slug":"mindfulgarden-delirium-care-st-pauls-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phcventures.ca\/fr\/mindfulgarden-delirium-care-st-pauls-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"PHC Ventures Helps Bring\u202fMindfulGarden&#8217;s\u202fDelirium-Care Technology\u202fFrom\u202fEvaluation to Everyday Use at St. Paul&#8217;s Hospital\u202f\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/phcventures.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/mindfulgarden-delirium-care-technology.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phcventures.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/mindfulgarden-delirium-care-technology.jpg 600w, https:\/\/phcventures.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/mindfulgarden-delirium-care-technology-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phcventures.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/mindfulgarden-delirium-care-technology-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collaboration between Providence Health Care, PHC Ventures, Innovate BC and\u202fMindfulGarden\u202fshows how Canadian health innovations can move from real-world evaluation to health-system adoption and investment.\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>VANCOUVER, B.C. <\/strong>\u2014 A made-in-B.C. technology first brought into St. Paul\u2019s Hospital (SPH) for clinical evaluation is now moving into routine patient care, demonstrating a pathway for Canadian health innovations to make the difficult transition from pilot to adoption.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providencehealthcare.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Providence Health Care<\/a>\u202f(PHC) has\u202fpurchased\u202ftwo units from\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/mindfulgarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MindfulGarden<\/a>,\u202fan interactive, biofeedback-based technology designed to help calm patients experiencing anxiety,\u202fagitation\u202fand delirium, for ongoing use in St. Paul\u2019s Hospital\u2019s Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU).\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The procurement follows a multi-year collaboration involving\u202fMindfulGarden, PHC Ventures, PHC clinicians and\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovatebc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Innovate BC<\/a>, through Innovate BC&#8217;s Integrated Marketplace program, which helps B.C. companies\u202fvalidate,\u202fdeploy\u202fand scale their innovations while de-risking adoption for industry partners. That collaboration enabled the technology to be evaluated in a real-world clinical environment and build evidence with frontline health care teams. Following that journey, PHC Ventures has also invested in\u202fMindfulGarden\u202fand will continue to support the Vancouver-based company as it works to expand adoption and scale.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToo many promising Canadian health technologies struggle to move beyond the pilot stage,\u201d said Brian Simmers,\u202fPresident\u202fof PHC Ventures. \u201cThis partnership demonstrates what\u2019s possible when innovators, clinicians, health systems and commercialization partners work together to generate evidence, support adoption and create a pathway to scale.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Promising Technology to Clinical Evaluation\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PHC Ventures first identified\u202fMindfulGarden\u202fthrough\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/creativedestructionlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creative Destruction Lab<\/a>\u202fas a promising Canadian health technology with potential within PHC. This early-stage discovery reflects PHC Ventures&#8217; role in identifying innovative solutions and is the first step in the pathway it uses to help move innovations from concept to everyday clinical impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through data generated by the Integrated Marketplace, PHC Ventures was able to bring\u202fMindfulGarden\u202finto PHC for further evaluation and connect the company with Dr. Alana Flexman, an anesthesiologist and researcher at St. Paul&#8217;s Hospital (SPH) whose research interests include delirium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDelirium is one of the areas where we really don&#8217;t have effective management, so we tend to give drugs,\u201d said Dr. Flexman. \u201cThis is a great opportunity to address that gap.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That collaboration led to a three-month quality improvement evaluation in the CSICU, where clinicians used\u202fMindfulGarden\u202fwith patients experiencing post-operative anxiety,\u202frestlessness\u202fand mild delirium.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strong Frontline Support Drove the Decision\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results were decisive. Across 11 clinician interviews, participants consistently described the technology as calming, easy to use and an effective distraction tool, with all 11 expressing a positive\u202fperception\u202fand interest in continued use. Of 14 completed staff surveys, all respondents said they were satisfied with the technology and would use it again, and 12 recommended it for permanent implementation.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand extended beyond the study itself: staff began asking to use the device with patients outside the formal evaluation, requiring the research team to pause broader use until a follow-on study could begin.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The clearest sign of impact was not a statistic,&#8221; according to the evaluation team. &#8220;It was that nurses wanted to keep using the technology.&#8221;\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That frontline enthusiasm, combined with the technology&#8217;s ability to\u202foperate\u202fwithout EMR integration, dedicated hospital Wi-Fi or the collection of patient health information, supported PHC&#8217;s decision to\u202fprocure\u202ftwo\u202fMindfulGarden\u202funits for ongoing use at SPH, with delivery expected in September 2026.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Investment and a Commercialization Partnership\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the successful evaluation and procurement, PHC Ventures has invested in\u202fMindfulGarden\u202fand will continue supporting the company&#8217;s growth and adoption.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This wasn&#8217;t a decision made because we liked the technology, it was driven by a clear business case,&#8221; said Simmers. &#8220;Delirium is costly to\u202fmanage:\u202fit&#8217;s associated with antipsychotic use, extended length of stay and increased need for one-to-one patient observation.\u202fMindfulGarden\u202fdemonstrated the potential to reduce reliance on all three, while also offering something we\u202fdon&#8217;t\u202fhave today \u2014 a non-pharmacological alternative in a space where medication has been the default. The return on investment and labour savings made this an easy case to support, and it&#8217;s exactly the kind of evidence-backed value we look for at PHC Ventures.&#8221;\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraser Health and Royal Columbian Hospital continue their own evaluation of\u202fMindfulGarden\u202fthrough the Integrated Marketplace project. \u201cThis is exactly the kind of momentum we want to see companies build through the Integrated Marketplace. By working with industry partners to\u202fvalidate\u202ftheir technologies in real-world environments, B.C. innovators can\u202fdemonstrate\u202fvalue, build\u202fcredibility\u202fand gain the traction they need to reach new customers and scale. Seeing\u202fMindfulGarden\u202ftake that next step shows how demand driven innovation programming can strengthen our health-care system while creating new opportunities for B.C. companies to grow,&#8221; said Peter Cowan, President and CEO of Innovate BC.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;St. Paul&#8217;s was a natural fit for this early adoption of\u202fMindfulGarden,&#8221; said Founder &amp; CEO Catherine Winckler. &#8220;Not only did we have an incredible clinical champion in Dr. Flexman and an understanding of the business challenges in HealthTech from Brian Simmers and his team, but my connection to the hospital is personal. My colon cancer was spotted early at St. Paul&#8217;s and surgery was successful. In recovery, I\u202factually experienced\u202fdelirium first-hand and it was an invaluable perspective. I called it my best working vacation ever.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Comes Next\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separately funded,\u202frandomized pilot trial led by Dr. Flexman as Principal Investigator and Dr. Steven Reynolds as Co-Principal Investigator \u2014 funded by the Canadian Anesthesiologists&#8217; Society is underway at SPH and expected to conclude in October 2026.
