2026 PHC Ventures Summer Intern, Simone Peets <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Simone Peets grew up watching her parents navigate the health care system from the inside \u2014 her mother a hematologist, her father an intensivist, both physicians at St. Paul\u2019s Hospital (SPH). It\u2019s a vantage point that shaped how she thinks. \u201cSeeing it from my mom\u2019s lens has been really interesting,\u201d she says. \u201cShe does a lot of value-based care work, and that\u2019s something I want to carry into my own career.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a fourth-year economics student at Queen\u2019s University with a focus on health economics, Peets is spending the summer as an intern at PHC Ventures, putting that value lens to work in a very hands-on way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her most tangible contribution so far: an AI-powered business development tool built using Python and Copilot. The tool lets teams query information in plain language to identify relevant clinical expertise and opportunities across PHC. It\u2019s a direct answer to a friction point that has long slowed things down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHistorically, we\u2019ve just relied on known connections or word of mouth,\u201d Peets explains. \u201cThat can take a really long time. So that was a key factor in what led this project.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes the tool notable isn\u2019t just what it does, it\u2019s how she built it. Peets had little prior experience with AI agent development; most of her university experience has been the opposite. \u201cIn school, AI is a no-go,\u201d she says with a laugh. \u201cSo I tend to stay away from it.\u201d Working at PHC Ventures flipped that.  \u201cIt\u2019s been refreshing to be in a workplace that embraces AI and encourages us to think about how it can be used in meaningful, responsible ways.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tool may still be new, but its potential extends well beyond a single use case with opportunities to streamline how teams across Providence Health Care connect, collaborate, and find expertise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The physician-matching project is one thread in a broader experience that Peets describes as intentionally wide-ranging. Stuart Bowyer, Senior Director of Commercialization and Partnerships, along with the team have given her room to move across operations, workflow optimization, and exploratory problem-solving brainstorming sessions where they sketch out goals, then she takes her own route to get there. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cNo two days are the same,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m often brought into different conversations and projects, and I enjoy adapting quickly and figuring out where I can add value.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also offered exposure that doesn\u2019t exist in a lecture hall. Last week, she got a tour of the OR.  \u201cThat\u2019s not the kind of experience you typically get in business or venture capital,\u201d she acknowledges. \u201cBut it gives you a much better understanding of why the work matters and what it looks like on the clinical side. You can\u2019t learn that in school.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team, which she describes without irony as \u201cthe Dream Team,\u201d has been a big part of what\u2019s made the experience click.  \u201cThey make a real effort to check in, include me in conversations and make sure I feel supported,\u201d she says. \u201cComing in as a student, surrounded by people who are so experienced \u2014 that\u2019s been really valuable.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the office, Peets is having a summer that reflects her range. When she\u2019s not at PHC Ventures, she\u2019s chaperoning match ball carriers for the FIFA World Cup where she gets to pick up kids from the airport and watch games alongside them at pitch-side. \u201cThere\u2019s just an energy in the city right now,\u201d she says.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back home in Vancouver for the season, she\u2019s also spending time with Luna, her chocolate lab, hiking and walking the beach. In quieter moments, she paints \u2014 acrylics, mostly \u2014 and bakes. Her Queen\u2019s roommates, she notes, have learned to recognize a stress-bake in the making: \u201cThey always know there\u2019ll be something in the kitchen for them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, she plans to work for a few years after graduation, travel (with Asia and Africa are at the top of her list) and eventually pursue an MBA, likely at UBC. But she\u2019s in no rush to draw the map. What she\u2019s most comfortable with, it turns out, is exactly the kind of environment PHC Ventures has given her: one where the path forward isn\u2019t fully defined, and where building something useful matters more than having all the answers up front. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Her advice to other students considering a similar opportunity is simple: \u201cTake the chance. You\u2019ll learn things you wouldn\u2019t necessarily learn in school or in a more traditional internship, and you\u2019ll be supported along the way. It\u2019s a unique environment where you can contribute, grow, and come away feeling that the work you did really mattered.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
